But because it appeared in Einstein's own memoir, the anecdote is still widely accepted. Norton challenged Einstein's story in his book " Einstein for Everyone" (Nullarbor Press, 2007), in part because as a 16-year-old, Einstein wouldn't yet have encountered Maxwell's equations. But, Einstein wrote, this contradicted work by another scientist, James Clerk Maxwell, whose equations required that electromagnetic waves always move at the same speed in a vacuum: 186,282 miles per second (300,000 kilometers per second). In a thought experiment as a teenager, he wrote, he imagined chasing a beam of light.Ĭlassical physics would imply that as the imaginary Einstein sped up to catch the light, the light wave would eventually come to a relative speed of zero - the man and the light would be moving at speed together, and he could see light as a frozen electromagnetic field. How did Einstein come up with special relativity?Īccording to Einstein, in his 1949 book " Autobiographical Notes" (Open Court, 1999, Centennial Edition), the budding physicist began questioning the behavior of light when he was just 16 years old. That meant it couldn't be explained by classical mechanics. If the speed of light didn't change despite the Earth's movement through the ether, they concluded, there must be no such thing as ether to begin with: Light in space moved through a vacuum. Michelson and chemist Edward Morley calculated how Earth's motion through the ether affected how the speed of light is measured, and unexpectedly found that the speed of light is the same no matter what Earth's motion is. In 1887, wrote astrophysicist Ethan Siegal in the Forbes science blog, Starts With a Bang, physicist Albert A. Researchers set about trying to detect that mysterious ether, hoping to understand it better. To shoehorn the odd behavior of light into Newton's framework for physics scientists in the 1800s supposed that light must be transmitted through some medium, which they called the "luminiferous ether." That hypothetical ether had to be rigid enough to transfer light waves like a guitar string vibrates with sound, but also completely undetectable in the movements of planets and stars. In the animated series, it is an alternate realm that gives access to many different lands separated from this world's space and time, which is referenced in the code as the rainbow aura's codename is "SPACETIME".But some things couldn't be explained by Newton's work: For example, light. Yes, it does cost more to keep buying Mach 3 blades instead of buying Xtreme IIIs, but I rather pay a little more for such a high quality shave w/ the Mach 3 then butcher my head w/ something that is cheaper. And in truth, you aren’t saving much money w/ the Xtreme III compared to the Mach 3. My contacts are disposable & still have the same quality as non-disposable. Yes, I know it is disposable & will sacrifice quality, but it still is low quality in my opinon to what a disposable razor should be. It was just thrown together with 3 blades. One can tell that the Xtreme III wasn’t built & developed with such time, care, & money like the Mach 3. And the Xtreme III shave is pretty painful compared to the Mach 3. Washing out hair is a chore due to how close the razor blades are. Not as much comfort padding as on Gillette razors, but the shape of the handle is better then the Mach 3, thus giving you more control. One thing I did like was the handle shape. There are no really hi-tech features on the Xtreme III that are found on the Mach 3 or other high quality razors. It doesn’t have nearly the protection as the Mach 3 or Sensor, and isn’t as sharp of course. However, it feels like shaving with a disposable razor because that is what it is. It can do the job in 1-2 strokes, like the before mentioned Mach 3 & Sensor. I have tried their Protector & Tracer and to shave smooth like the Mach 3 and Gillette Sensor do in one to two strokes over the area, the Protector & Tracer does the job in 3-4 strokes or more. Great ideas, but not developed to the best of their ability. And as always in my opinion, Schick is behind. This is Schick’s new baby…their attempt at competing with the already legendary Gillette Mach 3. I’ve been fortunate enough to receive 2 reviews from readers about this product. Still, it’s definitely the best disposable razor I’ve used, and would function well as a regular-use razor if required. I’m also not entirely comfortable using disposables regularly, as it seems a waste to throw away the entire thing when you’re done, as opposed to just throwing away a blade. The initial investment is lower, but Mach 3’s blades are cheaper per use than a new pack of Extreme III disposables. Price-wise, I don’t see much advantage to the Extreme III compared to the Mach 3. I did tend to cut myself a bit more with the Extreme III though. At first it looked like it might be a little flimsy, but I didn’t have any problems using it at all.Īs I said earlier, the shave was comfortable, and skin irritation levels were almost as low as the Mach 3. It’s the most substantial handle of any disposable razor I’ve used, but it’s definitely lightweight when compared to the Mach 3 handle. They also tended to gunk up a bit more than the Mach 3 blades, but they aren’t hard to clean out. They didn’t seem as durable as the Mach 3 blades to me, but for a disposable razor they’re fine. The blades on the Extreme III are pretty good, and I felt the shave I got was close and comfortable. It’s primary competition in the shaving market is the Gillette Mach 3, so most of my comparisons will be between those two blades. The commercials I’ve seen show tennis player Andre Agassi shaving his face and head, which is nice. The Schick Extreme III has been marketed based on two primary qualities: it’s a three blade razor, and it’s conveniently disposable. This is not the place for an entire primer on how to manage Mac OS memory but it's a fine art that every Mac OS user should be familiar with. The system cannot reallocate idle memory to active processes as needed the way it can in OSX, so the best-running systems are usually doing one thing at a time. Having multiple apps open in the background - even if they're idle, is the #1 no-no. The most important one is probably keeping unnecessary memory usage to an absolute minimum. You do need to keep some guardrails in place to help ensure that however. All of this is why Apple went through the incredibly awkward and painful process of moving the entire Mac ecosystem to the preemptive multitasking UNIX-based system called OSX.Īctually, considering the fragility of the entire principle the old Mac OS is based on, it's kind of amazing that it does work as well as it does. In the old Mac OS, memory allocation was fixed (by the settings in the "get Info" window) and it's easy to have an app simply run out of memory, thereby causing it to hang and therby causing the entire system to go belly-up. Although it is now rarely used in larger systems except for specific applications, cooperative multitasking was once the only scheduling scheme employed by Microsoft Windows and Classic Mac OS to enable multiple applications to run simultaneously.Īs a cooperatively multitasked system relies on each process regularly giving up time to other processes on the system, one poorly designed program can consume all of the CPU time for itself, either by performing extensive calculations or by busy waiting both would cause the whole system to hang.Īlthough "one poorly designed program consuming all of the CPU time for itself" is a common cause of "freezes" it's not the only cause. This approach, which was eventually supported by many computer operating systems, is known today as cooperative multitasking. I've excerpted this from Wikipedia "Cooperative Multitasking":Įarly multitasking systems used applications that voluntarily ceded time to one another. I never liked those… turntable-tape deck-CD player-tuner combo stereos either. Please excuse my blabbering-on here if you’re already geared in this manner… some may not be aware of this “eliminate-the-variables” approach. Here, trimmed down to the absolute bare necessities after many years, only the “internet portal” machine freezes, crashes or pukes around here anymore, thankfully. I use a much newer iMac for email & internet and “sneaker-net” to move files for upload or download. Again, with no unnecessary or extraneous un-needed “fat”. One for the raw sound files and “preliminary work” and a second Mac for additional “polish” (strings and other effects) before tweaks & final output or archiving… with back-ups written along the way as he progresses towards his finished piece. And all three are tied together over a LAN (each workstation has dual monitors for tool palettes, etc.).Ī friend of mine (DAW) operates in a similar fashion, only sharing between just two Macs. Another is for 3-D modeling & rendering (OS 9.2.2), while a third (OS 9.2.2 & 10.4.6) Mac is dedicated to Illustrator and the merging of images (and text) for final output. One is a scan & Photoshop station (OS 8.6). The “division of labor” ‘round here is placed on 3 different "older" Macs. And I do mean completely stripped down except for their intended specific use. No internet, mail, music, games, etcetera on my graphics workstations. Maybe common knowledge… or standard practice, but “trimming the fat” or “paring down” what apps, CPs or extensions (that you don’t really need) is optimal for stability on any “workstation” regardless of OS version or its’ intended duty. When you hold a thumb at arm’s length and close one eye, then close the other, the thumb moves against the background. How Is Parallax Used In Calculating A Parsec? That’s because because one arcsecond of parallax is one parsec. We need to know both parallax and arcsecond to properly calculate a parsec. Parallax and An Arcsecond Walk Into A Classroom… Calculating A ParsecĪnd how do scientists (or time-traveling smugglers) use parsecs?īelieve it or not, with some high school math, you can calculate a parsec. Here’s a visualization: if you were drew a straight line between an object in space and Earth, and a straight line between the same object and our Sun, if the angle between the lines is one-arcsecond, then the object is one parsec away – or 3.3 light-years. To put that into perspective, there are more than 70 star systems within 3.3 light years of planet Earth. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) passed a resolution – B2 – in 2015 that included a mention of an existing explicit definition of what a parsec is:Įxactly 648000 / π astronomical units, or approximately 3.08567758149137×10 16 metres Parsecs to Light Years Why Do We Use Parsecs?īasically, parsecs are what scientists use to find the distance of stars within 100 light years of our solar system. It takes place during a scene where Han Solo brags that the Millennium Falcon “made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.” The famous space smuggler was bragging about his ship the Millennium Falcon’s ability to endure shorter, much more risky routes through hyperspace. This article begins with an infamous line in Star Wars: A New Hope. The unit was likely named by a British astronomer, Herbert Hall Turner, who suggested the unit of astronomical measurement in 1913. The term parsec is a portmanteau – a combination of two words: Parallax and Arcsecond. To be exact, a parsec is a unit of distance that’s equal to ~19 trillion miles:ġ parsec = 3.26 light-years = 19 trillion miles Partially because of the off-the-wall time travel theories we’ve extrapolated from it, but mostly for George Lucas’ mistaking of time for distance. Han Solo’s boast will forever live in astronomical infamy. “You’ve never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs.” ― Han Solo Despite holding her own Lily Allen seems like a perverse piece of castingīut there’s something about its obvious desire to shock that’s dated it somewhat: the constant dwelling on child abuse and murder in Katurian’s stories feel more of a piece with the ‘90s In Yer Face scene McDonagh emerged from than the actual plays he wrote in the ‘90s. And ‘The Pillowman’ is full of brilliant bits, as the bemused Katurian is aggressively questioned by cops Tupolski and Ariel about a string of horrifying child murders that would appear to exactly replicate the writer’s (largely unpublished) stories. McDonagh’s more frequently revived, Ireland-set earlier plays have generally stood up well. As the play wears on, it turns into an intricate, gristly Chinese box of horror, a horrible story made up of horrible stories, that serves as a consideration of the purpose of writing and the impulse to do so. Set in a nameless totalitarian state, ‘The Pillowman’ follows the police interrogation of Katurian, an abattoir worker and prolific amateur writer of horrifying short stories. McDonagh’s subsequent colossal film success has only embellished its legend, and plans for a West End revival have long been mooted.Īnd so now, 20 years after the National it’s here and it’s… But for whatever reason it never made it to the West End: all the more frustrating because it splashily transferred to Broadway, with Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crudup joining the cast. Martin McDonagh’s dark 2003 comedy – which starred a pre-‘Doctor Who’ David Tennant – was extravagantly praised upon its debut at the National Theatre’s smallest venue, the Cottesloe. Guests can choose to ski with an Olympic skier.‘The Pillowman’ is the great ’00s British play that got away. Deer Valley has taken this concept to the next level. You should be concerned if this figure is at or beyond 95C. The best way to monitor your temperature while gaming is to game for a while and then check back in with the program to see the maximum recorded temperature. Just be aware that this program puts an extremely heavy load on your PC. However, if you want to measure the maximum possible temperature, you can check by running a Prime95 stress test for about 30 minutes ( download here) in Windows 10 or Windows 11. If you want to check your PC's CPU temperature during normal use, you can leave Core Temp running while you perform common tasks. So, for example, the CPU in the above image has had a minimum temperature of 32C and a maximum of 51C and is, therefore, running at a normal temperature. But we're more interested in the Min and Max columns, which show the absolute minimum and the absolute peak temperature recorded while the program runs. The left-hand side of the measurements shows the real-time temperature of each CPU core, and you can also see the measurements in the taskbar. Just be sure to untick the freeware option during installation.Ĭore Temp provides temperature measurements for every core in your CPU. This is a simpler tool that works with a more basic UI. You can also use the Core Temp tool, one of the best CPU temperature tools for Windows 11 and Windows 10, to monitor the temperatures ( download here). While CAM is intended to be used with NZXT's products, it works really well as a casual monitoring tool in Windows 10 or Windows 11, even if you don't have any NZXT hardware. You can use the software in Guest Mode to avoid creating a user account, and you can also disable the program from starting automatically with Windows if you don't plan on using it often. These are just a few examples of many, but we'll show you how NZXT's CAM and Core Temp work because we have found that these two are the easiest to install and use. CAM is developed by PC case, power supply, and CPU cooler manufacturer NZXT. For more advanced users, or if you're overclocking your CPU and want more in-depth measurements, Intel's eXtreme Tuning Utility (XTU) and AMD's Ryzen Master software are designed by the chipmakers and also offer expansive options. There are multiple programs to choose from, with the best tools for checking CPU temperature, including Core Temp, NZXT's CAM, AIDA64, HWiINFO, or HWMonitor.
